The end of World War II began a new era. It started the age of liberalization. The world becomes more liberal, democratic, and open. The fall of the U.S.S.R. proved that people want to live in a democratic society. Globalization becomes a resounding success. And America played, still playing, the role of a leader to maintain the liberal order. Since 1945, America has paved the way for other countries to become a part of that order. America played a huge role in the easy operations of bodies like the United Nations and WHO.
But the events like Brexit,
Trump in the White House have certainly dented the idea of the liberal order.
President Trump has decided not to fund these organizations as he boasts
himself as a nationalist. America’s defunding creates a void. To fill the gap,
China has emerged- the new superpower.
China has increased
funding in the organizations which are known to be renowned for their liberal
attitudes.

In this precarious
situation, the doubt arise which side will India choose. China is a regimented
one-party controlled country that is sitting on India’s northern border. The
current Modi government doesn’t share a good relationship with China. On the
other hand, India’s Prime Minister Modi shares a good rapport with President
Trump. But will the Modi government stand with someone who is in a withdrawal
mode? Seeing vacuum, European leaders like Merkel and Macron may enter the
scene and carry the liberal order baton. European Union may stable the
situation and gain some lost grounds and reduce China’s influence. But will it
happen? China shares a great relationship with Russia, but Russia is a
declining power. Russia shares a good relationship with India also. There is no
sign that Russia is keen on maintaining the liberal order.
Modi’s right-wing government also boasts India as the largest democracy in the world. Can we consider this as a cue that Modi wants to maintain the liberal order? Only time will tell which side is Modi choose. But the big question, what will happen to the liberal order.
