To be a non-conformist, you need to listen to everyone. These days, everyone wants to become a non-conformist. In the advertising industry, everyone is ready to give their creative input. People like David Ogilvy and Steve Jobs have immortalized the term non-conformist.
I’ve over seven years of experience in advertising. I’ve realized that most people are wannabe non-conformist. I don’t know whether I’m a non-conformist or not. But one thing I realized that to become a non-conformist, you have to listen to everybody. You may not follow what others say, but listening to them will help you to understand the norms, the clichés. People, especially the conformists, generate ideas from what they see every day. So, if you’re able to find clichés that mean half of your battle is over because you don't follow the clichés. A non-conformist stands apart because he doesn’t conform to the norms.
The rule is simple- if you don’t listen to other’s ideas then how come you reject them. However, this doesn’t mean other ideas are bad always. But if you want to live a creative and non-conformist life, your brains have to get bombarded with ideas from everyone. You cannot ignore the crowd. You have to be in the crowd and be different. Being different in a crowd makes you a non-conformist.
